Description

OESD PolyMesh is a lightweight, soft, non-woven cut-away embroidery stabilizer, and a stitcher favorite for knits and stretchy fabrics. It is thin enough not to show through lightweight fabrics, yet strong enough to hold embroidery stitches through repeated washing and wearing. The soft finish does not scratch, so it is a good choice for anything that sits against skin.

Because it is a cut-away, it stays in the garment: hoop it under the fabric, stitch, then trim the excess close to the design with scissors. Black is the color for dark garments and thin dark knits, where a white backing would shadow through. For light fabrics use PolyMesh White. The 10" x 10 yard roll suits 4" x 4" and 5" x 7" hoops, and a 6" x 10" turned lengthwise.

What one 10" x 10 yd roll makes

~60 4" x 4" hoop cuts
6" x 6"
~45 5" x 7" hoop cuts
8" x 10"
~27 6" x 10" hoop cuts
9" x 13"

Cuts are the hoop size plus about 2" each way, laid along the 10-yard length at the 10" width and turned where that fits more. Counts are approximate and assume no waste.

Compare and choose

Cut-away vs tear-away: why use PolyMesh on knits?
Knits stretch, and a tear-away leaves nothing behind to hold the stitches once the garment is worn and washed, so designs pucker and distort. PolyMesh stays in the garment and supports the stitches for the life of the piece. Use tear-away on stable wovens; use cut-away on anything that stretches. Medium Weight tear-away for wovens
PolyMesh vs PolyMesh Fusible: which should I buy?
They are the same soft cut-away mesh. The fusible version has adhesive on one side, so you iron it to the back of the fabric before hooping; that stops sweater knits and lightweight wovens from stretching or shifting in the hoop. Choose plain PolyMesh for fabrics you do not want to iron; choose fusible when the fabric moves. PolyMesh Fusible 15" roll
White or black PolyMesh?
Match the backing to the fabric. Use white under light and pastel fabrics and black under dark garments, so the mesh does not shadow through thin knits. PolyMesh White 15" roll
How do I trim cut-away stabilizer?
After stitching, unhoop and trim the excess about 1/4" from the design with curved embroidery scissors, keeping the blade flat so you do not nick the fabric. Round the corners so the edge does not show as a hard line through the garment.
Is PolyMesh heavy enough for dense designs?
It is a lightweight mesh chosen for softness. For very dense designs on knits, use two layers, or step up to a medium cut-away such as Kimberbell Medium Cut-Away. Kimberbell Medium Cut-Away 12" roll
How does PolyMesh compare to Sulky Soft 'n Sheer or Pellon Soft-N-Stay?
They are all soft, lightweight cut-aways for knits and garments. Sulky Soft 'n Sheer comes in 8" and 12" rolls, Pellon 380 Soft-N-Stay on a 20" bolt and a 12" package, and PolyMesh in 10", 15" and 20" widths plus black. Pick by width, color and the brand your patterns call for. Sulky Soft 'n Sheer 12" roll
