Description
CutAway Heavy is OESD's heaviest everyday cut-away backing. It stays in the garment after stitching, so large and stitch-intensive designs keep their shape through wearing and washing instead of pulling or puckering. It is a good choice for denim, sweatshirt fleece and heavy knits, and OESD notes it as an excellent choice for open-arm and multi-needle machines. It softens after washing.
This is the white version; for dark fabrics, the black 15" roll keeps the backing from showing through. The 10" roll covers 4" x 4", 5" x 7" and 6" x 10" hoops. For medium-weight knits and lightweight denim with lighter designs, CutAway Medium is less bulk.

Compare and choose
- CutAway Heavy vs CutAway Medium: which do I need?
- Go by stitch count and fabric weight. CutAway Heavy is for large, stitch-intensive designs on denim, sweatshirt fleece and heavy knits. CutAway Medium handles medium to heavy stitch counts on medium-weight knits and lightweight denim with less bulk. If a heavy backing would show as a stiff patch on a lighter garment, step down to Medium. CutAway Medium 15" x 10 yd
- Why use a cut-away instead of a tear-away on sweatshirts and knits?
- Knits stretch every time the garment is worn. A tear-away is gone after stitching, so nothing holds the stitches when the fabric moves and dense designs can distort. A cut-away stays behind the design for the life of the garment. Use tear-away on stable wovens such as towels and canvas; use cut-away on anything that stretches.
- White or black CutAway Heavy?
- Use black on dark fabrics so the backing does not show at the design edges or through thin spots. Use white on light and mid-tone fabrics. The stabilizer is otherwise the same weight and job. CutAway Heavy Black 15"
- Which width should I buy?
- Buy the width that fits your largest hoop with room to clamp. The 10" roll covers 4" x 4" to 6" x 10" hoops, the 15" roll reaches 8" x 12", and the 20" roll is for large hoops and multi-needle machines. All are 10 yards long. CutAway Heavy 20" x 10 yd
- How do I trim a cut-away after embroidery?
- Unhoop the piece, then trim the backing with curved embroidery scissors, leaving a small margin around the design so the stitches stay supported. Round the corners so they do not poke through the garment. Do not cut close enough to nick a stitch.
- Is there a softer option for lightweight or light-colored knits?
- Yes. A heavy cut-away can show through or feel stiff on t-shirt knits. OESD PolyMesh is a lightweight no-show mesh cut-away for thinner fabrics, and Sulky Soft N Sheer is a similar lightweight option. OESD PolyMesh White 15"
