Description

Hobbs Poly-Down in pre-cut packages from crib to king. It is the polyester we recommend when a customer wants a soft, light quilt with a little more loft than cotton, no shrinkage, and easy washing: kids' quilts, charity quilts, and anything that will go through the laundry often. The 1/4" loft is enough to make quilting designs stand up without fighting the machine.

Poly-Down is made from very fine white polyester, so it drapes well and feels soft rather than springy. It is bonded to resist bearding and migration, holds its loft wash after wash, and is non-allergenic. Hand quilters find it easy to needle; machine and longarm quilters like the definition it gives. It works under light and dark fabrics (test dark fabrics first). Packages ship to every address, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Compare and choose

Polydown vs Thermore vs Cloudloft: which Hobbs polyester do I want?
Thermore is the thinnest at about 1/16", made for garments, table runners and miniatures, and can be quilted 9" apart. Poly-Down (this package) is the all-purpose 1/4" loft for bed and baby quilts. Cloudloft is softer and loftier still, for a fluffier, snugglier quilt. If you are not sure, Poly-Down is the middle choice and the one we sell most. Hobbs Thermore package
Polydown vs Hobbs 80/20: which is better for a baby quilt?
Either works. Poly-Down is lighter, does not shrink, dries faster and is non-allergenic, which is why many of our customers choose it for babies and charity quilts. Heirloom 80/20 is a touch flatter and gives the crinkled, traditional look after its 3-5% shrinkage. If the quilt will be washed constantly, Poly-Down; if you want the heirloom look, 80/20. Hobbs 80/20 Heirloom package
Hobbs Polydown vs Quilters Dream Poly: what is the difference?
Both are soft white polyesters that do not shrink and can be quilted up to 4" apart. Dream Poly comes in several lofts (Request is thinnest, Select mid, Deluxe heavier); Poly-Down is a single 1/4" loft, roughly comparable to Dream Select. Poly-Down is bonded, which makes it a little more stable on a longarm frame. Pick by the loft you want; they quilt similarly. Quilters Dream Select Poly package
Which package size do I need?
Add at least 4" to every side of your finished top for a longarm, or 2" to 3" for a domestic machine, then pick the next package up. Crib 45" x 60" suits tops to about 40" x 54"; twin 72" x 90" to about 66" x 84"; full 81" x 96"; queen 90" x 108" to about 84" x 100"; king 120" x 120" for anything larger.
Does Polydown shrink or need pre-washing?
No on both counts. Polyester has no shrinkage, so the quilt stays the size you made it, and Hobbs does not recommend pre-washing any of its battings.
Can I use Polydown for hot pads or microwave bowl cozies?
No. Polyester can melt or scorch in a microwave. Use 100% cotton batting with no scrim, or Pellon Wrap-N-Zap, for anything that will be heated. Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 45" x 1-yard package
Is it good for hand quilting?
Yes. Hobbs rates Poly-Down excellent for hand quilting; the fine fiber needles easily and the loft shows off small stitches. It is also rated excellent for machine quilting, so it is a safe choice if you do both.
