Quilt Kit Builder Step 5 — Batting at Linda’s Electric Quilters is the final layer of your custom quilt kit — the filling that gives your quilt its warmth, drape, and loft. Choosing the right batting is as important as choosing the right fabric, and Linda’s carries an excellent selection of cotton, polyester, wool, and blended battings to suit every quilting style and machine type.
How do I choose the right batting for my quilt?
Consider the quilt’s intended use (bed quilt, wall hanging, garment), your preferred quilting density, and whether you’re quilting by hand or machine. Cotton battings provide a natural, breathable feel. Polyester offers more loft and easy washing. Wool is warm and lightweight. Blends balance multiple qualities.
How much batting do I need?
Most quilt patterns list the required batting size. Choose batting that is at least 4 to 6 inches larger than your quilt top on all sides to allow for longarm loading or domestic machine quilting. Standard packaged battings are sized for common quilt dimensions.
What batting is best for longarm quilting?
Any batting that feeds smoothly and maintains stable loft works for longarm quilting. Popular longarm choices include Hobbs Heirloom 80/20, Quilters Dream, and Warm Company battings. Roll format battings are the most convenient for high-volume longarm studios.
Does batting shrink when washed?
Cotton batting may shrink 3 to 5% on the first wash, creating a classic antique crinkle effect. Polyester and blended battings typically have minimal shrinkage. Pre-washing cotton batting prevents unexpected size changes in your finished quilt.
